Thank you for joining me today. As someone who has navigated challenges to turn a vision into reality, what inspired you on the path of entrepreneurship, and how has that initial inspiration evolved over time?
I've always thrived off the idea of freedom and independence. Working different jobs let me see firsthand how much I desired to work for myself. I enjoy the work I do today as a freelance writer because it's aligned with my natural passion for media and helps prepare me for the entrepreneurial endeavors that await me.
Reflecting on your journey, what unexpected challenges have you encountered, and how did you navigate them?
I've encountered many unexpected challenges. Mostly in the form of job loss. I navigated each experience by taking the time I needed to heal and then going full throttle into my next endeavor. I look at every setback as a way for a comeback and I make sure to come back stronger than I did before.
It's like a rulebook that tells everyone exactly how a brand should look, sound, and feel so that it's recognizable everywhere
Can you share a pivotal moment that defined your entrepreneurial journey?
A pivotal moment that defined my entrepreneurial journey was launching my blog a few years out of college due to roadblocks I experienced with securing a job in media. I paved my own lane and created a platform that grew into something bigger than I expected. Within a year, I was managing a team of writers, a radio show, and interviewing celebrities. I used the experience as a stepping stone into the media industry and eventually landed my first paid full-time job in entertainment media.
How do you stay resilient in the face of setbacks, and what role does resilience play in entrepreneurial success?
Resilience comes naturally when you're working in alignment with your passion and purpose. I stay true to what sets my soul on fire and what naturally interests me. So giving up is not an option because I'd be crazy to stop. Especially when looking at how far I've come.
What steps have you taken to amplify underrepresented voices within your industry or community?
The work I do with Black Enterprise allows me the perfect platform to amplify underrepresented voices in the Black community. There are so many amazing Black entrepreneurs doing phenomenal work in all types of industries and with us having to make up for so much lost time, every endeavor counts. My role as a writer allows me to help share these stories with a large audience and help raise awareness of thriving and rising Black businesses. Not only that but learning their stories inspires me as a professional and entrepreneur. It's the gift that keeps on giving.
In your opinion, what role does networking play in the continuous evolution and adaptability of an entrepreneur?
Networking plays a crucial role in the continuous evolution and adaptability of an entrepreneur for several reasons. It provides entrepreneurs with access to a wide range of resources, including capital, mentorship, talent, and information. It allows entrepreneurs to engage in knowledge exchange with peers, mentors, and industry experts. It can lead to innovative solutions, joint ventures, and partnerships. It provides entrepreneurs with valuable insights into market trends, customer preferences, and competitive landscapes. The diversity in networking can bring fresh ideas, alternative viewpoints, and creative solutions. It also allows entrepreneurs to build relationships with mentors, advisors, and like-minded individuals who can offer guidance, support, and encouragement during both successes and setbacks. It can even lead to new opportunities, like speaking engagements, industry events, and conferences.
How do you manage stress and maintain focus during challenging periods in your entrepreneurial journey?
I manage stress by first admitting that I'm stressed. It's a process to even realize things are out of whack mentally and emotionally. Once I come to that realization I might turn off my laptop and breathe, go for a walk, listen to jazz or classical music, and/or meditate. Taking these necessary pauses allows me to recenter and focus on what matters. Oftentimes the things that stress us out the most are solvable or miniscule to our overall purpose.
As you look back, what advice would you give to your younger self when starting your entrepreneurial venture?
The advice I would give my younger self would be to apply for freelance writing positions! If I had done that right out of college along with interning, I would've secured a job a lot sooner.
